A flashy New York lawyer blows through a stop sign and gets pulled over by a small-town West Virginia sheriff.<\/p>\n

Confident in his expensive suit and oversized ego, the lawyer smirks and says,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you stop me?\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff replies,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t come to a complete stop at that stop sign. License and registration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer chuckles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI slowed down. Nobody was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff folds his arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou still didn\u2019t STOP.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now fully in courtroom mode, the lawyer grins and says,<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficer, I\u2019m an attorney. I know the law. If there\u2019s nobody coming, slowing down is perfectly safe. You can\u2019t seriously tell me that a few inches of movement makes a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff looks at him for a moment.<\/p>\n

Then he calmly reaches into his patrol car.<\/p>\n

The lawyer watches curiously.<\/p>\n

The sheriff pulls out his ticket book.<\/p>\n

\u201cStep out of the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer laughs.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff points to the side of the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like you to stand right over there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer reluctantly gets out.<\/p>\n

The sheriff walks over and points to a spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cStand here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer looks confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust stand there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer sighs and does as he\u2019s told.<\/p>\n

The sheriff walks back to the patrol car.<\/p>\n

Then suddenly takes out his baton.<\/p>\n

The lawyer\u2019s eyes widen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff walks toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to hit you with this baton.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer takes a step back.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you insane?!\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff stops.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you backing up?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you\u2019re going to hit me!\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff nods.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He points toward the lawyer\u2019s car.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t need to know whether I was going to hit you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer stares at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou only needed to know that I was going to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff smiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cSame thing with the stop sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer stands there silently.<\/p>\n

The sheriff holds out his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cLicense and registration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer slowly reaches into his pocket.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff writes the ticket.<\/p>\n

Before handing it over, he looks up.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou lawyers always have a lot to say.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer sighs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trained to argue.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff smiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

He hands him the ticket.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been trained to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer looks at the ticket.<\/p>\n

Then at the sheriff.<\/p>\n

Then quietly gets back into his car.<\/p>\n

As he drives away, the sheriff watches him go.<\/p>\n

His deputy asks,<\/p>\n

\u201cSheriff, did you really intend to hit him?\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff grins.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The deputy laughs.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo why did you pull out the baton?\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff shrugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I wanted to demonstrate something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff looks at the empty road.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes the best way to explain the law\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiles.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026is to let someone experience the difference between \u2018almost stopping\u2019 and \u2018stopping.\u2019<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

And the deputy shook his head.<\/p>\n
