I stopped for dinner at Subway.<\/p>\n
Three kids were standing near the counter, quietly counting a handful of crumpled bills and coins between them.<\/p>\n
They pooled everything they had and ordered one sandwich.<\/p>\n
Then one of them looked at the cookie display and whispered,<\/p>\n
\u201cNot enough for a cookie.\u201d<\/p>\n
I told the cashier, \u201cAdd three cookies to mine.\u201d<\/p>\n
The kids looked at me.<\/p>\n
Their faces lit up instantly.<\/p>\n
One of them smiled so wide that I could see the missing tooth in his mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not homeless.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked at her, confused.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey come here almost every evening,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey buy one sandwich and split it between the three of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked back at the kids.<\/p>\n
One was carefully dividing the sandwich into three equal pieces.<\/p>\n
He used the edge of a napkin to make sure each piece was the same size.<\/p>\n
The smallest boy noticed me watching.<\/p>\n
He smiled politely.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re okay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
That sentence hit me harder than anything else.<\/p>\n
They weren’t asking for money.<\/p>\n
They weren’t begging.<\/p>\n
They were simply doing what children do when they have learned far too early that some things have to be shared.<\/p>\n
I asked the cashier why they always came here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey live with their grandmother a few blocks away. Their mother works nights. Their grandmother doesn’t have much.\u201d<\/p>\n
She paused.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut here’s the part that gets me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey never complain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Apparently, whenever they had enough money for only one sandwich, they divided it three ways.<\/p>\n
And whenever they had a little extra, they saved it.<\/p>\n
Not for toys.<\/p>\n
Not for candy.<\/p>\n
For their grandmother.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe likes chocolate,\u201d the cashier said.<\/p>\n
I looked at the three cookies sitting on the counter.<\/p>\n
Then I looked at the kids.<\/p>\n
\u201cActually,\u201d I said, \u201cmake that four.\u201d<\/p>\n
The cashier smiled.<\/p>\n
I bought three cookies for the children and one for their grandmother.<\/p>\n
When I handed them over, the oldest boy stared at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis one’s for Grandma,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n
He looked surprised.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n

He hugged the cookie box against his chest like it was something precious.<\/p>\n

I sat down for a few minutes and watched them eat.<\/p>\n

They divided everything carefully.<\/p>\n
The middle child broke his cookie in half and gave part of it to his little brother.<\/p>\n
I asked him why.<\/p>\n
He shrugged.<\/p>\n

We all laughed.<\/p>\n
Before I left, I quietly paid the cashier enough to cover several future meals for the three kids.<\/p>\n
But I asked her not to tell them who had paid.<\/p>\n
As I walked toward the door, I heard the oldest boy say,<\/p>\n
\u201cSomeday, when we have enough money, we’re going to buy someone else dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stopped.<\/p>\n
I turned around.<\/p>\n
He didn’t see me.<\/p>\n
And somehow, that sentence stayed with me long after I left the restaurant.<\/p>\n
Sometimes, kindness isn’t about how much you can afford to give.<\/p>\n
